New Research: Does Drinking Refusal Self Efficacy Matter?

We have a new paper published in Substance Use and Misuse.

Ability to resist alcohol consumption has been theorized to curb drinking & its neg consequences. This work has been done in primarily White samples. We found Hispanic-White differences in consumption and drinking problems. Drinking refusal self-efficacy explains partially group differences. White students’ belief they can refuse to drink is linked to lower levels of alcohol use and problems, but no such link was observed with Hispanic students. Data caution against making assumptions of the generalizability of protective role of drinking refusal self-efficacy to Hispanic individuals. There is a need to consider ethnocultural nuances and tailored harm reduction strategies in groups of color.
