XRF Laboratory

SMU’s Department of Anthropology maintains two portable handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers for use in the elemental characterization of anthropological and geological materials.  When not being used in the field, the instruments are housed in the Archaeometry Laboratory in the Department of Anthropology.  Access to the instrument is directed by Dr. Matthew Boulanger.

The instruments are available for use by SMU faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) following completion of radiation-safety training.

Researchers not affiliated with SMU who are interested in having analyses performed should contact Dr. Boulanger in the Department of Anthropology.

We conduct projects at-cost for research purposes, and are able to provide analyses at no cost for select projects conducted by Native American tribal governments and THPOs.
