North American Archaeology (3304)

Course Description

This course is an introduction to the archaeological study of North America’s past. We will include only geographic areas north of Mexico. We will begin with a review of the nature of North American archaeology and a summary of what is known about the settlement of this continent. Then we will outline the culture history of the culture areas of North America. Although our main focus will be on what archaeologists have learned about our past, we will also explore various issues related to being a professional archaeologist and the relationship between archaeology and diverse groups within American society.
