My research is centered around an evolutionary approach to studying culture, and this draws on physical geography, landscape ecology, middle-range research, and geoscience to study past human behaviors. I am a member of several ongoing field projects; however, I also conduct a significant amount of collections-based research that seeks to live up to our discipline’s professional and ethical obligations of preserving and studying material culture while treating archaeological sites as nonrenewable resources.
I published my first anthropology-related paper—on the treatment of indigenous peoples at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair—as a high-school student. Since 2005 I have published more than 55 peer-reviewed scientific articles and nearly 20 refereed book chapters, and I have served as editor of three edited volumes. A full listing of all my contributions can be found on my curriculum vitae.
I take a collaborative approach in my work, and I actively work with citizen-scientists, undergraduates, graduate students, fellow faculty, and tribal members as peers and coauthors.
