For my picture of India, I chose to analyze Caves of Karlie – 7. Attendant Musicians photographed by Charles Scott. The image contains eight men of a wide age range all of whom are busy attending to and playing their individual instruments. The instruments vary from small, medium, and large drums to different types of horns of differing shapes and sizes. The men are seating at what seems to be a large pit or stage decorated in a very elaborate manner. The Karla Caves are likely to belong to a wealthy individual or group as indicated by the extremely labor intensive, ornate carvings that envelope every visible surface on the walls. Additionally, these men are likely to be playing for an audience and since they are playing with what appear to be traditional instruments as opposed to European instruments, they are likely to be providing entertainment for their fellow natives of India.
For my picture of Mexico, I chose the image Burning the Dead captured by the Mexico View Co. The picture was taken some time between 1910-1917, a time period in which the Mexican Revolutionary movement created intense tension between Americans and Mexicans along the border of the two nations. The image contains a very large pile of dead people, most likely Mexicans. Apart from the bodies that are being burned in the large pile the picture is essentially barren except for a large, dark rectangular figure looming in the background, which I could not make out but am very curious about. These people died in a land in which their existence had little value as evidenced by the purposefully disrespectful manner in which their corpses are being treated. The action of burning the dead bodies itself indicates the negligence towards this group of people, but the fact that a person captured this image is even more evidence of the fact that these people were not valued because their degrading state was circulated in the form of a postcard. The action of burning the dead bodies was likely a warning for other Mexican revolutionaries and war propaganda to entice American support against the revolutionaries.
