On Friday and Saturday July 24 and 25, I performed a solo, Le Souvenir, set to the jazz standard For All We Know sung by Lillian Boutte in a concert called Lost Voices in Jazz.

Lost Voices

Five male choreographers worked with Zoe Sealy’s Minnesota Jazz Dance Company in the 1980’s. I was one of them. The other four were taken in the first wave of AIDS deaths. Karla Grotting, a member of the MJDC and also a dancer with JAZZDANCE, has painstakingly reconstructed their work. It has been a labor of love and it was an honor being a part of this project. The concert was at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium at St. Katherine’s University in St. Paul. The solo was created at the Bates Dance Festival in 1992 and uses a handkerchief, a conduit – the senses connecting with memory. I came out of retirement to do this and have enjoyed dancing again. The last time I performed was at the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Bates Dance Festival in 2005.
