Requesting Recommendation Letters

There are different emphases in letters, such as
  • preparation
  • leadership
  • innovation
  • collaborativeness
  • work ethic
  • character
  • grace under pressure
Different writers can address or reinforce different points.  Choose emphasis and writer carefully.
For each aspect of you that needs to be addressed, identify at least one person who can speak to that aspect.
Ask yourself
  • why am I choosing <writer>?
  • what do I want him/her to focus?
You don’t want someone to write you a weak or generic letter of recommendation.  Ask “can you write me a strong letter?”
If you want me to write you a strong letter, I need
  • CV/resume
  • why you are applying for program
  • drafted letter highlighting what you want me to address: include anecdotes I may have forgotten
  • address (I prefer to send letters electronically) and deadline
If I’ve agreed, remind me until you’ve received confirmation from me that I’ve sent your letter.
