Potential Graduate Students
I am currently open to accepting PhD students in both the medical anthropology track and the archaeology track. If you are interested in working with me I strongly advise that you contact me directly before the application deadline in January. I do not assign research topics for graduate students, but rather work with them to develop their ideas and formulate a dissertation project both exciting and feasible. I don’t assume that all members of the lab are interested in pursuing an academic career, nor do I assume that the career goals with which you enter the program are necessarily going to remain stable across your time in graduate school. I will do my best to promote your career by, for example, passing invitations to speak, introducing you to my network, suggesting you for prizes, working with you to secure funding. The more you can tell me about what you want, the better I will be able to help you get there.
If you are eligible (US citizen or permanent resident), I encourage you to apply for a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, or other external funding package either before arrival at SMU or in your first year of study here. There are other external funding opportunities available for graduate students, and early in your time at SMU we will collaborate with the Director of Graduate Fellowships and Awards to identify potential funding sources to supplement the funding packages available through SMU. There is funding available from the Moody School, and from the Dedman Graduate Student Assembly.
Potential Postdoctoral Researchers
Enquiries from potential postdoctoral researchers are always welcome, and I’m keen to discuss applications for any relevant funding scheme. Two sources of postdoctoral funding most relevant for members of my lab are the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, but these are not the only potential sources of support. Applications for these fellowships require significant preparation time, so please be in touch with me as soon as possible so I can help you put your best foot forward.
Potential Undergraduate Students
I am particularly interested in hearing from undergraduates interested in conducting research while at SMU. There are many funding opportunities available, some of which include salary and some of which include funds to cover research expenses. These include:
- The Department of Anthropology Fry Undergraduate Award
- The Hamilton Undergraduate Research Scholars Program
- The Engaged Learning Fellowship
- The Maguire Public Service Fellowship
