Kabir Singh: A tragedy of love story

According to Rachel Dwyer, “Hindi film draws on popular ideas for understanding the world, such as religion, morality, earlier philosophy, social customs, literature, popular wisdom. Using consensus as a form of knowledge, Indian cinema takes these sources and transforms them into other meanings”. (Bollywood’s India: Hindi Cinema as a Guide to Modern India). When people talk about Indian movies, probably many people’s first thoughts are sing and song. I am no exception. After watching an Indian movie, what impressed me most was the plot of singing and dancing. As I have watched more and more Indian movies, I have a new perspective on Indian movies. Besides “3 idiots” and “

Slumdog Millionaire”, other movies like “P.K.” and “Toilet – Ek Prem Katha” are good movies. These are movies which dare to discuss Indian social issues in India, like women’s status in India, even the religion. This Sunday, I watched a movie called Kabir Singh in an Indian movie theatre Fun Movie Grill, which is located at 1210 E. Beltline Rd, Richardson.

Kabir Singh tells a story about love between Kabir and Preeti. Kabir is a surgeon. However, he always cannot control his emotions well. In a football match, he once again loses control and fights with another player. The Dean asks Kabir to either apologise or leave the college. Kabir chooses latter, until he meets Preeti. Preeti is a first-year student in college. When Kabir first saw Preeti, he falls in love with her. However, Preeti’s father does not like Kabir and throws him out. Finally, Preeti is forcibly married to someone from her caste. Since then, he has been devastated. Eventually, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, he falls into a coma during an operation. At the end of movie, Preeti comes back to Kabir.

Although movie has a good ending, the mood in the second half of the movie is always serious. There are two reasons for tragedy: the first is Kabir’s personality, the second is Preeti and her family. Kabir is easy to be angry, and that is why Preeti’s father does not like him. But Kabir had never hurt Preeti, the main reason for their separation is her father.

As the heroine of the movie, Preeti Sikka’ lines are really too few. But from her mother’s education and attitude towards her at home, Preeti’s timid character is not without reason. Whenever she wanted to express her opinion, she was always stopped by others with words or violence. When Kabir tried to stop her wedding, she just sat in the room, and kept silent. There is a scene in the movie that impresses me so much: when Preeti’s father scolded Preeti, Preeti tried to explain, her mother slaps her. Many Indian families have patriarchal attitudes, and mother also plays an important role in this.

At the end of movie, Kabir met Preeti again. She was not happy in her arranged marriage. The good news is she did not fully surrender to life, and she left her husband. Kabir Singh is an attractive movie.
