I had the best time at R2B2, mostly because I got to dress up in an Indian outfit and take 9792845624 photos with my friends. It was the 11th annual R2B2 with 14 collegiate Raas and Bhangra teams competing (SMU R2B2). They managed to bring in Penn Masala, which is apparently a renowned group. I am not too into their music but it was interesting to see them live. Many people around me were talking about how they are known to be only great on tracks instead of at live performances. It is definitely still pretty cool to get a group that performed at the IIFA awards. This was my second time attending and even though I do not love watching raas or bhangra performance, the night was a fun one.
I snuck in to the balcony seating area to see my friends and the performances looked awesome from that angle. All of the other teams were so supportive of the performing teams. There was a lot of cheering and shouting the whole time and it was cool to be in such a high-energy space.
There were six judges – three for the raas teams and three for the bhangra teams. University of Florida’s Gator Raas team got first place. Their theme was social media. Second place went to University of Houston’s Roarin’ Raas team and their theme was firefighters. For bhangra, Alamo City placed first and Husky Bhangra from Univeristy of Connecticut won second.
All in all, the sold-out event was a blast and I am glad I dragged myself out to McFarlin Auditorium on a Saturday night.
