Bombay Police

Bombay_Police

In this photo there are four Indian policeman. They are wearing some sort of robe, with various different shoes. From the looks of it the shoes are some sort of leather, and the man who seems to be the leader of the group is the only one wearing dark shoes, while the other members of the group are wearing lighter shoes. They are all wearing hats, or some sort of turban. One member of the police squad is sitting on the ground, another is sitting on a chair, and another is sitting on some sort of ledge that is in the background, while the last one is standing. Two of the members are looking at the camera, while the other two seem to have their attention directed towards the man sitting in the chair. Three of the members have mustaches. They all are carrying some sort of stick, which looks like a modern day nightstick that police officers use.

Based off of my observations, the man sitting in the chair seems to be the leader of the group. This is supported by the fact that he is the only one that is sitting in a chair, while the other members of his police squad are sitting on the ground or simply standing up. Also, the two men that are standing up seem to have their attention directed towards him, indicating they are waiting for him to say or do something. Based off of the wall and the ledge with its design in the background, the police squad is probably in front of some public building, as opposed to a house. Also, I do not think that any of these men have guns on them, but instead only have their sticks or bats as their weapon.

Some questions one might ask when looking at this photo are:

Why is this picture only of four policeman? Are they some sort of special unit?

What building are they in front of and what is their purpose of taking this photo?

Fiesta on the Viga

There is an awful lot going on in this photo. There are around twenty boats in the picture, and they are a mixture of simply trade barges and pole boats that men are steering with their long poles. Along the left bank is a large crowd of people, probably at least two hundred. On the right side of the bank there is a building, and one man is standing on the bank looking at the camera while holding his pole. On the left side of the bank there are several trees growing next to the water, while on the right side of the bank there is only one tree that can be seen. Some of the pole boats that people are on have canopies, and some are rounded canopies while others are simple flat ones.

This river is probably used as a major trading hub. It looks as though people are transporting goods along the river in their boats. It also looks as though people use this river for transportation, for instance, the boat in the very center of the picture has several people on it beneath the canopy of the boat, while there is a man in the back of the boat directing it with a long pole. The building on the right is probably used as a storage warehouse.

Some questions one might ask when observing this picture are:

Is there normally that many people walking on the left side of the bank, or is this some sort of march?

Is the building on the right side of the bank some sort of warehouse or is it a residential home?
