BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Ann Rife Cox and Investment Fund is administered by the undergraduate students of the Cox School of Business under the pervue of the Investments Committee of the Southern Methodist University Board of trustees. Currently, the fund has assets of approximately $2.6
million, and it represents one of the oldest and longest student-managed portfolio traditions in the United States.
The Practicum convenes every school year in the Fall and Spring Semester. Each class has the opportunity to see its investment decisions in play for nearly 8 months before a new class takes over management of the portfolio.
Professor Brian Bruce takes the helm each year and guides the class through the rapids of the investment process.
The Nancy Chambers Underwood Investment Fund is another distinguished investment portfolio, but solely managed by Southern Methodist University's MBA graduate business students.
Currently, the combined funds have total assets of approximately $6 million, representing one of the largest and oldest student-managed portfolios in the United States.

COURSE INFORMATION
The goal of the course is to give students hands-on money management experience that culminates in an annual report describing the entire management process as applied to the Ann Rife Cox Endowment Fund. Seven major areas of fund management are covered:
(1) the client interface
(2) an investment outlook for the coming year
(3) asset allocation
(4) the equity portfolio profile
(5) individual equity security transactions
(6) the bond portfolio and transactions
(7) performance evaluation
One course highlight is that outstanding guest speakers from the investment community visit the class and describe their philosophies and strategies.
Past guest speakers have included: Liz Williams (Treasurer, SMU); David Anthony (Ranger Capital); and Jane Gilday (Barrow, Hanley, Mewhinney & Strauss).
Further, the annual report is intended to compare favorably with the annual reports provided by top money managers around the world. The class presents its recommendations and opinions in various forums including a presentation to the Investment Committee of the SMU Board of Trustees.
