Meeting Roles

Toastmaster - When used in terms of a function performed at a meeting, this means the person who acts as master of ceremonies.

Table Topics Master - Leads the impromptu speaking portion of the meeting, preparing and asking questions of a general nature.

Speaker - Working from one of the various Toastmaster manuals, such as the Communication and Leadership Manual, this person prepares and delivers a speech (normally 5-7 min. in length, but can vary).

Evaluator - Evaluates the Speaker’s speech.

General Evaluator - evaluates the Evaluators, and evaluates the various parts of the meeting.

Ah Counter - Sounds an audible device (such as a clicker or a horn) when hearing "ah," "um," and other crutch words (except during the formal speeches).

Timer - Uses a stopwatch and colored lights (or flags) to keep each speaker within the accepted time limits.

Grammarian - Presents the word of the day and reports its usage along with the proper use of the English language during the meeting.

Vote Counter - Tallies the votes and reports on the Best Speaker, Best Evaluator, and Best Table Topics.

Other Helpers at some Toastmasters meetings include Listener, Posture Patrol, Joke Master, etc.

 

Distinctions

CTM - (Competent Toastmaster) awarded to a member of Toastmasters after giving 10 prepared speeches based on the lessons in the Communication and Leadership manual.

ATM - (Advanced Toastmaster) This designation has 3 levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold.

CL - (Competent Leader) awarded after a Toastmaster earns their CTM, serves one complete term as a club officer, attends officer training, helps prepare a club success plan, and conducts 2 presentations from The Successful Club Series.

AL - (Advanced Leader) awarded after a person earns their CL, serves as a District officer, completes the High Performance Leadership program, and successfully serves as either a club sponsor, mentor, or coach.

DTM - (Distinguished Toastmaster) This is the highest designation that a Toastmaster can earn. It is awarded after a person earns both ATMG and AL recognition.
