Tom Downing's Home Page

Hi! Welcome to my home page! I'm the Online Learning Systems Administrator/ Developer for the Linda and Mitch Hart eCenter at SMU. Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in 1946, in San Francisco, California, but I was raised in Dallas, Texas, graduating from Hillcrest High School in 1964. I returned to the San Francisco Bay area to attend college and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968. Returning to Dallas I received a Masters Degree from SMU's Perkins School of Theology 1974. I spent ten years as a United Methodist minister serving churches in the North Texas Annual Conference including Lucas, Denton, Little Elm and Henrietta. I became a computer consultant for Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1983. As one of SMU's first microcomputer consultants I installed the first microcomputer lab in the Bradfield Computing Center. Later as network manager I helped install the first fiber optic based network on campus. Later as head of Academic Computing Services I was responsible for supporting academic users in using technology to promote learning and research. In May of 2001 I joined the Hart eCenter at SMU where I will be developing online learning systems for both the university and its commercial partners. Our most exciting project at the moment is assisting in starting The Guildhall at SMU, a school for digital game developers. I live in Richardson, Texas with my wife, Carolyn, and two children, David and Amy.
