Article I. Name Of The Organization
The name of this organization shall be the Gay and Lesbian Students Organization.
Article II. Statement Of Purpose
The purpose of the GLSO shall be to provide educational opportunities and programs for the SMU community. The primary educational focus shall be to address issues and concerns which face gay, lesbian and bisexual students and to address stereotypical images and misconceptions of gay, lesbian and bisexual people. In conjunction with the educational focus, GLSO shall provide a comfortable environment for gay, lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual students to understand such issues and alleviate related prejudices.
Article III. Membership
The members of GLSO shall be students, whether full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate, of Southern Methodist University. Membership in GLSO shall be open to all members of the student body without regard to sex, race, creed, national origin, color, religion, age, sexual orientation or physical disability.
Article IV. Officers
A. The officers of the GLSO shall consist of two co-presidents, a treasurer and a secretary elected by a majority vote of the membership.
B. Officer positions are open to full-time SMU students who have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 2.0 and are not under any form of disciplinary sanction.
C. The GLSO membership shall elect two co-presidents (one male and one female) to conduct GLSO meetings and act as primary spokespersons for the GLSO. The co-presidents may be of the same sex only if one of the representative sexes does not have a willing person to serve.
D. The GLSO shall elect a treasurer responsible for all financial dealings of the GLSO.
E. The GLSO shall elect a secretary responsible for keeping the minutes of all GLSO dealings, all correspondence and all official GLSO records.
F. Any officer not meeting his or her responsibilities may be removed from office by a majority vote of the GLSO membership. A vacancy in any office resulting from removal shall be filled by nomination and a majority vote of the membership.
G. A vacancy in an office resulting from resignation shall be filled by nomination and a majority vote of the membership.
Article V. Advisor
The GLSO shall select an advisor(s) from the faculty and/or staff of Southern Methodist University.
Article VI. Term Of Office
The term of office shall be one academic year, from May 1 to May 1. Election of officers shall take place annually during the spring semester.
Article VII. Meetings
Regular meetings shall be scheduled by the officers and advisor(s) and shall be open to all members of the Southern Methodist University community. Two-thirds of the membership must be present at any meeting where a membership vote is required.
Article VIII. Finances
All monies appropriated through the Students' Association or obtained from other sources shall be administered by the treasurer.
Article IX. Amendment
This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the GLSO membership. Any member may submit amendments to the constitution.
Article X. Ratification
This constitution shall go into effect with a three-fourths vote of the GLSO officers, the approval of the Student Senate Organizations Committee and approval of the Student Senate.
