Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961 at Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk, England, into a privileged, aristocratic family. By 1969, her parents, Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche, divorced and her father won custody of Diana and her brother, Charles and two sisters, Sarah and Jane. As a small child, Diana and her siblings spent time as playmates with the royal family's children.

She attended Riddlesworth Hall Prep School at Diss, Norfolk from 1966-1974, and West Heath ear Sevenoaks, Kent from 1974-1977. After completing finishing school at the Institute Alpin Videmanette in Rougemont, Switzerland, in 1978, she returned to London and, with three other friends, rented an apartment in South Kensington where she became a kindergarten teacher. Diana also renewed her contacts with the royal family.
