Nu Kappa Chapter History

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,Inc. was founded November 17, 1911 on the campus of Howard University by three undergraduate students and a faculty advisor seeking to establish an organization based on the motto "Friendship is essential to the soul".

The establishment of the Nu Kappa chapter on SMU's campus occurred in the Fall of 1977 through the hard work and dedication of six courageous men: Larry Belcher, Stephen Hamilton, Byron Boyd, Alvin Burris, Glen Barry, and Joe Norman. These men, the "600% Solution", were pledged by the local Dallas graduate chapter, Theta Alpha, and were granted a charter by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on October 14, 1977. SMU followed a month later and gave the chapter a charter on November 17, 1977. Establishing a chapter at SMU was extremely difficult since there were only 175 black students attending SMU in 1977. However, the chapter was able to flourish and successfully bring new brothers into the fold throughout the late '70s into the late '80s.

The chapter saw its numbers decrease due to the lack of black males on campus, most notably due to the Death Penalty that the SMU Football program was given. The 90's saw two more lines cross over into Omega Land: one in the Spring of 1993 and another in 1998. The chapter was dormant shortly thereafter, only to be resurrected in the Spring of 2004 by the "Three Sons of Manhood". Since the Spring of 2004, two new members have been initiated into the chapter: Jon "Alquetraz" Killen - Spring 05 and Dez "Q-ball" Willingham - Summer 2006 .

Our chapter, on the verge of its 30 yr anniversary, is still hard at work doing the business of Omega. We continue to serve the community in the spirit of true brotherhood and unity.
