Article I. Name
The group shall be known as Pursers of All Things Holy and Sacred (PATHS).
Article II. Purpose
PATHS (Pursuers of All Things Holy and Sacred) is a student-based organization that seeks to provide a safe and open environment for the practice and exploration of earth-based spirituality – that is, spirituality that acknowledges the divinity embodied within the earth and our environment, as well as the divine nature of humanity and relationship with each other and the Universe.
PATHS fosters awareness, growth, and tolerance through educational and religious functions, such as interaction with the diverse traditions of earth-based religions, lectures, workshops, and a variety of religious ceremonies.
PATHS recognizes the beauty and validity of all modes of religious expression.
Article III. Circle Sanctuary
PATHS shall be sponsored by Circle Sanctuary ("Circle"), a non-profit international Nature Spirituality resource center founded to help people from many spiritual orientations connect with each other as well as with the spiritual dimensions of Nature.
At least three voting members of PATHS must also be members of Circle Sanctuary; this is accomplished by subscribing to Circle Magazine.
There will be one elected PATHS liaison to Circle to keep in contact with Circle by providing minutes of meetings, documentation of activities, and any other information as requested.
A once-monthly report must be mailed or emailed to Circle including the above information as well as accounts of member activities, challenges, and actions, etc.
At least one authoritative member of Circle is to be on the PATHS general chat email list and the PATHS execs email list.
Article IV. Membership
PATHS is open to all members of the SMU community. PATHS does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, veteran status, or sexual orientation.
Members may be censured by the group or have their membership revoked in the case of gross negligence or moral turpitude, that is, the serious advocacy of illegal acts of violence, causing others to act in ways that defy their personal morals by way of coercion, or discriminating against others solely because of their spiritual practices.
Article V. Voting
All active members, including officers, of PATHS have one vote. If an active member cannot attend a meeting where a vote is to be taken, he or she may vote via proxy provided her or she notifies the Secretary of this fact prior to the meeting. Any active member may choose to abstain from any vote.
The outcome of all votes and elections shall be determined by a simple majority except:
These shall require a ¾ majority of all voting members.
- A motion to censure a member
- A motion to revoke membership
- A motion to remove an officer from his or her position
- A motion to amend the constitution
Article VI. Officers
Officers in PATHS shall be elected in the Fall semester, at the meeting that falls closest to October 31. Officers shall be elected by simple majority. All persons holding office must be currently enrolled full-time students and may not be on academic probation. Titles will be President, Secretary, and Treasurer; additional titles may be added by a majority vote, as needed.
Article VII. Faculty Sponsor
The Faculty Sponsor shall be chosen by the membership of PATHS. The Faculty Sponsor is a nonvoting position. There are no administrative duties associated with the Faculty Sponsor position.
Article VIII. Constitution
If at any time this constitution comes into conflict with the rules for student organizations provided by Southern Methodist University, those rules shall take precedence.
This constitution may be amended at any time, excluding the first three weeks of the semester.
Any proposed amendment must be made available to all members two weeks before it is voted on.
As outlined in Article V, proposed amendments require a ¾ majority to be ratified.
