WARRING FACTIONS:
A film about war and identity

March 4 at 6:30pm in the Dedman Life  Sciences Bldg Rm132 SMU

Justin Mashouf; is an independent film maker who uses his new film “Warring Factions” to tell his personal story as a Muslim American and to speak the relatively untold story of a new generation of Muslim Americans struggling to find an identity in our post 9-11 world.

“At a time when lives are being lost on a massive scale and unspeakable damage is being done to the world, it is disheartening to see a generation of media makers relatively unmoved by the actions of their governments.  At the same time, millions of dollars are spent for propaganda manufacturing consent for war.  Very few voices have been raised against this destructive machine and I act to contribute my voice to the resistance.” --Justin Mashouf, Director of “Warring Factions”

Day of the Dead
Thursday, November 1st 12-100 PM at SMU Flag Pole.

Reading the names, mourning the dead. Military and civilian lives that have been lost int he current Iraq War.

In an effort to raise awareness and correct misconceptions, IANT will be hosting a seminar this Saturday, Nov 3rd at 10 am in the Richardson Masjid. It is specifically aimed to counter the recent effort by certain anti-Islamic groups to promote a nation-wide Islam Fascism Awareness Week.

Islam Fascism Awareness Week is an attempt to offset Islam Awareness Week with nationwide campus efforts promoting anti-Islamic propaganda. So far over 200 campuses have pledged to host such a week, including the University of Texas and other major campuses. It is, by process and content, a direct attack against Islam and a perversion of many of its ideas, values, and truths. Their guidebook may be viewed at the following link:

http://media1.terrorismawareness.org/files/Islamo-Fascmism-Awareness-Week-Guide.pdf

IANT’s seminar is intended to counter this insidious effort. It is aimed at both non-Muslims and Muslims for the purposes of clearing up misconceptions, teaching basic concepts, and helping people respond to anti-Muslim attacks.

The Ghosts of Abu Ghraib
Tuesday October 30th 1215-200pm. 1st Floor Underwood Law Library

The Film, The Lunch, and Discussion.of the Chilling Firsthand Account of Iraq's Most Notorious Prison... An examination of the prisoner abuse scandal involving U.S. soldiers and detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison in the fall of 2003. The familiar and disturbing pictures of torture at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison raise many troubling questions:

How did torture become an accepted practice at Abu Ghraib?

Did U.S. government policies make it possible?

How much damage has the aftermath of Abu Ghraib had on America's credibility as a defender of freedom and human rights around the world?

Acclaimed filmmaker Rory Kennedy looks beyond the headlines to investigate the psychological and political context in which torture occurred.

The SMU MSA would like to thank participants of the Fast-a-Thon that is being held in conjunction with the Ramadan Banquet at Southern Methodist University on Friday, October 5th.

On Friday, October 5th, please remember to abstain from all food or liquids during the daylight hours (5:48 AM to 7:11 PM) and refrain from negative thoughts and speech. Your willingness to forego food and drink will benefit a good cause, as local businesses will donate one dollar to UNICEF, assisting the children of Darfur, for each participant who pledges to go hungry for one day.

The MSA will be providing breakfast at the Hughes-Trigg Java City at 5:15 AM, so please join us if you can.

More importantly, at 6:45 PM, the Ramadan Banquet will commence in the Hughes-Trigg ballroom as we break our fast with a catered meal on behalf of the MSA. Please attend, as this meal is in part a recognition for the sacrifice you made throughout the day
