North Texas Chapter
The Church and Synagogue Library Association, CSLA, was founded in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in 1967, by a group of Church Librarians who felt they could benefit by sharing ideas and problems. The idea spread and flourished throughout the years and grew to encompass almost every state of this country and several provinces in Canada with a membership of more than 1464 members, both individual and church memberships. More and more chapters were formed. Chapters and members thrive and grow through participation in annual national conferences, through an excellent bi-monthly CSLA Bulletin, and the many CSLA publications covering library mechanics and creative ideas.
The North Texas Chapter of CSLA was established in 1976 and bravely hosted a national conference in Dallas at SMU its first year. This was favorably received and attended. We know that many of your church librarians or church representatives attended some of those workshops and meetings.
Chapter programs vary. Some are how to workshops, others may be book reviews, or perhaps a field trip to an area library or other points of interest. The opportunity to exchange problems and solutions that relate to the Church/Synagogue Library is one of the real benefits of membership. Some of the members are professional librarians, but most are not. Nearly all are volunteers.

NOTES ON THE SPEAKER
Ralph Hartsock
Our host is a long-time member of the North Texas Chapter of CSLA and a Musician and Senior Music Cataloger at the University of North Texas. He is also very prolific. He writes not only about music and librarianship but also on other arts, cultural events, and history. His reviews and articles appear regularly in the American Reference Books Annual, and he has contributed reviews to Choice, Material Culture, Music Reference Services Quarterly, Fontes Artis Musicae and CSLA News. Ralph has published three books, all of them academic titles. Two are bio-bibliographies of American composers, Otto Luening and Vladimir Ussachevsky. His Notes for Music Catalogers: Examples Illustrating AACR2 in the Online Bibliographic Record is a compilation of notes used by the Library of Congress.
Jeri Baker
Jeri Baker is the Librarian at Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. Previously, she had a lengthy career with the Dallas Public Library holding various age-related and management positions. Active in the Texas and American Library Associations, she has held a variety of elected and appointed positions including a stint on the TLA Executive Board and serving as Chairman of the ALA Young Adult Library Services Association Margaret Edwards Award Committee. In addition to her work in the field of librarianship, Jeri is a member of Rotary International and PEO. She currently serves on the CSLA Board as the Chairman of the Awards Committee. Jeri's academic background includes a BA (Journalism) from Southern Methodist University, a MLS from the University of North Texas, and a Specialist Certificate in Applied Gerontology, also from UNT. At Wilshire, she enjoys singing in the Sanctuary Choir and presenting weekly story time programs for classes from the Wilshire Early Childhood Education Center.
Rick Lewis
The owner and manager of Logos Bookstore in Snider Plaza, he will bring us up to date on publications of interest for our libraries. Rick formerly worked for Probe Ministries and has been President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Logos Bookstores. Rick and his wife Susan have managed the store in Snider Plaza for over 30 years. They are the proud parents of three sons.
Krish Dhanam
Born a Hindu in India, Krish Dhanam brings a special perspective to the church. He joined the Zig Ziglar Corporation in the sales department in October of 1991. Through speaking and teaching the timeless principles of its legendary founder Zig Ziglar, Krish has facilitated workshops and conducted seminars worldwide. He currently operates as Vice President of Consulting and Business Development for Ziglar True Performance and is Co-founder of Krish Dhanam Training International. His recent endeavor, Mala Ministries, seeks to train ministers of the Word in India. As a writer he has authored articles on a range of topics spanning from personal relationships to corporate change. Recognized by his peers as a dynamic personality, Krish says that sharing a stage with a President pales in comparison to watching a movie with his son. His book, The American Dream from an Indian Heart, is the unfolding of that journey and its hidden promise. Krish showcases how the American Dream is still alive and well as he tackles the issues of faith, freedom, discipline, dignity, pride, possibility, work ethic and relationships. His word pictures will resonate with readers long after they put this book down.
David Belknap
As a military dependant, David Belknap has lived in Kansas, Oklahoma, California, Florida, Nebraska, Ohio, Washington, and Texas. He received a BBA from Texas A&M in 1982, and has since been a sales representative in the steel business. David has been a member of Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, and has served as an ordained deacon and elder in the Presbyterian Church. Currently an 11 year member of Trietsch Memorial United Methodist Church in Flower Mound, he has taught various adult Sunday school classes for six years. He has recently taught classes on Communion to both adults and children, relating these to their Judaic heritage. David completed an Introduction to Judaism course at Kol Ami Synagogue in Flower Mound and has continued to study and fellowship with Rabbi Geoffrey Dennis. He has immersed himself in the Messianic teachings of Zola Levitt, and has visited the Messianic Jewish synagogue Baruch HaShem in Dallas, as well as visited with Holocaust survivors in Dallas. Married to Camille for almost 13 years, David is the father of two beautiful boys, Jacob (10) and Joshua (3).
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Very decisive resolutions were made during our business meeting on April 26th,
2008. Due to the low attendance to our programs in the last couple of years and
the reduced number of members willing to serve on the Board the following
decisions were made:
We will continue to provide at least one program in the Fall and a day of
workshops in the Spring.
The Chapter Lending Library is "up for grabs." We will give away whatever
holdings we have completely free and will not worry about "carrying it" around
for every meeting/program.
Our main means of communication in the future will be electronic through our new
blog (see below) and our web site (http://people.smu.edu/marisabel/north_texas_chapter.htm)
The Membership Directory will be maintained electronically and made available
for printing upon request. The web site will give information on how to access
all of our resources.
New Board members will be sought to carry on our mission as needed.
Watch this blog and the web site for updates.
I will continue to be the main contact for our organization and the "worker bee"
behind our means of communication.
Shalom,
Maria Isabel Lopes Garcia
