Panhellenic Membership and Recruitment: Belonging as a member of a women's fraternity or sorority is a social experience based on the fundamental right of a free people to form voluntary associations. It is one of the enrichments of college life. Any woman who wants the fraternity experience will find it possible to belong on most campuses today. Fraternity membership is a social experience arrived at by mutual choice and selection and is by invitation.

Fraternities exist because they:

  • Provide a good democratic experience.
  • Give value beyond college years.
  • Create, through their ideals, an ever-widening circle of service beyond membership.
  • Develop the individual's potential through leadership opportunities and group effort.
  • Fill the need to belong.

Fraternities continue because:

  • Young women feel a continuing need to belong.
  • Parents appreciate fraternity values and standards and cooperate to make membership possible.
  • College administrators, recognizing the values of fraternities, continue to welcome them on their campuses and to invite them to establish new chapters.

Here at SMU, formal membership selection, or recruitment, is a deferred process, taking place each January. In order to be eligible, all women MUST:

  • Successfully pass at least 12 hours with a 2.5 semester GPA at SMU or another college or university during the semester prior to going through recruitment. For example, to go through recruitment in the spring, a woman must be enrolled during the fall semester and pass 12 or more hours with a 2.5 GPA or higher. However, some chapters may require a GPA higher than a 2.5 to join. That information is private to the individual chapters, however the range of necessary GPA's is 2.5-2.8 for semester and overall.
  • Hold a 2.5 Cumulative GPA or higher
  • Not be on judicial probation or higher currently or in the last calendar year (i.e. if placed on DP in the fall, not eligible for one calendar year, even if probation ends during that same fall semester.)
