Beta Sigma Chapter 

  • Established on January 27, 1870 at DePauw University as the first Greek letter fraternity for women.

  • Established at Southern Methodist University on March 10, 1929.

Fun Theta Facts

  • Kappa Alpha Theta was the first women’s Greek lettered fraternity.
  • The first woman elected to the U.S. Senate in her own right was a Theta.
  • Our Philanthropy is CASA- Court Appointed Special Advocates.
  • “Lets Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins was written by Walt Disney for his daughters who were Thetas.
  • A Few famous Thetas:
    • Laura Welch Bush (initiated in 1966 at SMU): as the wife of George W. Bush, she became the First Lady of the United States. Prior to that, she had supported her husband as First Lady of the Republic of Texas.
    • Sheryl Crow: a Grammy- award winning vocalist and songwriter.
    • Lynne Cheney:  the wife of Vice-President Cheney and an advocate for literacy and education reform in the United States.
    • Kerri Strug: member of the 1996 Women’s Olympic Gymnastic team, which won the Gold Medal for the first time.
    • Amy Grant: recording artist with four Top 5 Hits and actress on television series Felicity.
    • Melinda French Gates: Microsoft’s General Manager and now wife of Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft.
    • Diane & Sharon Disney: Daughters of Walt Disney.
    • Nancy Kassebaum: Senator of Kansas and the first woman elected to the senate in her own right.
    • Ann- Margret: Actor in film, theater and television and a singer. Known for roles in Bye Bye Birdie, Grumpy Old Men.

 Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Kappa Alpha Theta exists to nurture each member throughout her college and alumnae experience and to offer a lifelong opportunity for social, intellectual, and moral growth as she meets the higher and broader demands of mature life.
