Controversial Images Unit

This image is of one of the World Trade Center towers is burning and the other is momentarily going to be hit by an airplane.
Many people may consider this image controversial because the WTC was an American icon and the entire event with the towers collapsing and thousands of Americans dying on American soil in one fail swoop bothers people. The image as a whole could be considered as offensive by some people.
The image has the redeeming quality of being a reminder about what can happen if an insane maniac becomes the head of state.
The image is newsworthy, hands down, and should be printed in large publications, especially when they one day hang the people responsible.

This image is of a man that appears to be falling from a WTC tower.
Many people would find this image controversial because this man appears to be doomed and that would be disrespectful to the deceased to portray him in such helpless fashion. The falling man is the offensive portion of this image.
This image doesn’t appear to have any redeeming qualities because there is no known purpose as to why it is necessary. Artistically, a viewer not knowing it was from the WTC might be convinced of merit in the image in that the falling could be symbolic of something else.
I think this picture is unnecessary sensationalism because it tells no story other than that a man has died. It is completely out of context, thus not worthy to be printed for a story.

This image is of an individual falling from one of the WTC towers apparently to escape the smoke of the smoldering building.
Many people may find this image controversial because the individual is suffering and probably panicking and in pain from the event that continue to rage. All the image serves is to show tragedy. The element of controversy is the individual falling.
This image may show redeeming qualities to serve as a reminder not to enter a smoking, burning building because one could become trapped with nowhere to go.
I think this image is unnecessary sensationalism because the tragedy can be shown without the disrespect for human life that an image of someone falling from a fire portrays. Many other images of just the fire would have sufficed to relay the message.

In this image, I see a person floating facedown in a river while a bystander is watering her dog on a bridge after Hurricane Katrina.
Many people may find this image controversial because the bystander is making no attempt to salvage the deceased body from the river yet she seems preoccupied with the seemingly trivial task of watering the sub-human dog. They would find the entire image offensive.
This image has the redeeming quality in that is shows the state of the situation after Katrina hit. The deceased was likely been deceased for days and is no longer in agony of any kind it is unnecessary that the bystander should be required to risk her life when the other person is long gone.
I think this image is newsworthy to be printed because it demonstrates the need for drastic clean up measures to be taken in the face of a national emergency.

In this image, we see a crucifix floating in an orange colored liquid which is apparently the photographer’s urine.
Many, many religious oriented people would find this image highly offensive and, for some reason, would probably prefer to be the judges of the photographer rather than leave that up to a higher power. These people would find the entire image blasphemous.
The redeeming qualities of this image lie in the different perspective the photographer has on the crucifix. Visually, it has artistic qualities that only make it look like an old, weathered print and this could be very fashionable.
I think the image is newsworthy because the world is comprised of many things, including both religion and art. The image provides a great tool to religious people who might be offended for they should not judge lest they be judged.

This set of images is the before and after visualization of a piece of iron being placed as art in a courtyard.
Many people may find these images controversial because the art appears to have been placed amongst older architectural structures somehow tainting the original purpose of the courtyard. Only the new art is offensive to these people.
These images have redeeming qualities is that art of various forms should and can live in harmony with each other and all admirers of art.
I think the images are newsworthy and should be printed to celebrate the fusion of old and new.
