Here are some important dates and events related to the kingdom of Israel:
1020 BCE - The kingdom of Israel is established by Saul. Prior to this time, Israel had been a tribal federation.
1010-970 - The kingdom is solidified and expanded by David (See map in HarperCollins Study Bible -" The Empire of David and Solomon").
970-922 - Solomon builds a temple in Jerusalem. The kingdom splits, and now there are two kingdoms: Israel in the north and Judah in the south.
722 - The northern kingdom is completely defeated by the Assyrian Empire. Judah has to submit to Assyria's power, even though it isn't entirely conquered like Israel.
The united monarchy that was established and expanded under Saul and David lasted for less than 100 years. Even so, the unified kingdom had a powerful effect on the Jewish memory. It would not be until 164 BCE, with the establishment of the Hasmonean Dynasty after the Maccabean Revolt, that Israel would become an independent state once agan.
