Luke and Jerusalem
Jerusalem is very important in Lk. It is mentioned 31 times in Luke and 59 times in Acts. Certain important events occur in Jerusalem, such as:
- Jesus' circumcision
- the transfiguration
- the resurrection
- the apostles' receiving of the Spirit during Pentecost (Acts 2)
- the Apostolic Council (Acts 15)
Jerusalem serves as somewhat of a focal point in Lk's gospel. It is the place to which Jesus is headed during his ministry, and it is the starting point for the movement of the church. In Lk, the action in the narrative progresses toward Jerusalem. In Acts, on the other hand, the story begins with the apostles in Jerusalem, but the events of the story soon cause the church to spread into a much wider geographical area.
