I’m a creative, adaptable, good collaborator, and skillful artist. skills I need to work on are risk taking, fundraising, and connections.
All of the positive things above could be improved of course. I found that If I am going to be more creative, I need to be more observant and aware of a lot of the things around me, so I can come up with more ideas. I also found that this plays into adaptability. As far as collaboration goes, I tend to work well with others, when they collaborate as well.
When it comes to risk taking, I’m not sure where the line lies between being ambitious and being stupid in ones ambition so I need to find that line so that I can be comfortable taking risks but not ones that could ruin me. So far I haven’t had the experience of taking a big risk. When it comes to fundraising I have not experienced it, at least not for personal purposes. Connections could be an easy thing to acquire but I need to put more time into it
So in conclusion these are the things I need to improve to become a better artist and increase my likelihood of becoming successful.
“To make a statement is one thing, but to act on it is another”. I’m Desiree.I am a studio artist who merges my love for psychology with my love for art. My artwork is meant to make people think of the world in more abstract ways and to create empathy and sympathy through drawings. Art is a great way to express emotion and speak for those who don’t speak up. I also have a plan to change the course of failure in troubled youth by setting up an organization that teaches kids to express their emotions through artistic means. If you wish to learn more or contact me, here is my business card.
Most of the time being motivated isn’t the problem but finding time to work is. In cases that I find myself unmotivated I usually weigh my options. “what will I achieve by doing nothing?” vs.”what will I get from doing?”. Or I try to figure out what’s causing me not to want to do something. Usually in cases like that it’s because it’s an assignment and I don’t feel I have enough control in the project. It seems that sometimes during an assignment I want to expand but I feel constricted by rules or time. Other times I find I’m not interested. In cases where it’s not an assignment like that I’m usually fine.
When I do my artwork I either need music or silence. Loud noises and loud talking tend to distract me from focusing. I come up with ideas usually when I am relaxed. Sometimes my ideas stem from topics that have recently been discussed throughout my day. This could be from class or just talking to people. I’m inspired by experience, emotions, thoughts, social interaction, and life . I like art projects where I can make a statement about something. The best kind of reward is when someone understands a piece or when someone sees something in a project/piece that I didn’t see before. The latter is my favorite because I can get ideas for future projects.
What I value in life is God, Family, Friends, Art , and Self- Fulfillment. I also value Martial arts (another activity I’m skilled at).
Without God and Family I don’t know where I would be today but I would probably not have decided to major in arts. My family encourages me and I believe that God gives us all our gifts and talents to use in this world. Many people wonder why I chose art if it doesn’t pay as well as a business or medical degree. One of my beliefs is that I was born having the gifts I do for a reason. If I was supposed to be a millionaire maybe I would be talented in calculus and computer science , but I wasn’t made that way. I know God has his plans so I trust that God will guide me. I also have my friends who share my interest in art as well as those who don’t but we all encourage each other.
Martial arts is great for self defense of course but it is also an art of the body. When we do forms (aka katas) it is sort of like dance with a fighting aspect. each form has a scenario to it and you practice your forms until you get it down into a muscle memory. It takes hours of practice and focus until you get the positioning of the body (hands, legs, shoulders, arms, and feet as well as toes) in the correct position. “silk and iron” is another point you try to perfect. Demonstrating strength as well as grace is a key goal you want to get to as you advance as well as keeping legs low and bent. As well as techniques I learn a lot of things that I can apply to life and school. Like in my art classes I have to practice keeping my arms straight while drawing just as I do in martial arts.
I mentioned in my first post that I might be interested in double majoring in pyschology and that I wanted to somehow be involved in the community. Psychology really feeds my curiosity about the human mind and our emotions. I am unsure how but I’ve had this idea about starting an arts program for children of battered women in shelters. It’s important for children and youth to somehow deal with trauma and express their emotions in a positive manner. I think if intervened early it could reduce a percentage of the cycle that happens with children raised in dysfunctional abusive families.
Last but not least is self-fulfillment. In the top of my webpage the under title says follow your passion to achieve greatness. I say this because I believe in order to truly be happy I have to do what I am passionate about. Passion drives me to work towards my goals. I don’t think I can truly be great at what I do in life unless I really cared about it. Successful people are not the people who did something because they were told they had to, but the people who fought to get to their goal.
After reading the two articles, I found that I liked the sections about work habits, that mentioned Physical activity and elaborating with a play on words, were the most interesting. Also the studying in different places aspect was cool. I often tend to want to go from place to place when I study for certain subjects so I thought it made perfect sense. I also get a lot of built up energy when I’m just sitting down and reading for a long time so I sometimes just get up and go somewhere else or kind of pace around.
I listen to music when I do my artwork or study. If I’m reading I need silence. I always make sure to eat something when I study because I need food to focus( and I just love to eat). Another thing I like is working on art assignments with someone else around so I can get feedback.
In Reading number two I found that I want to work on writing down my goals more so I can follow through, more for my other classes than in art, and that I want to reduce stress by doing more physical activities.
On the work habits cognitive wrapper sheet I found that I should focus on practicing technique, solving problems, and experimenting. I spent some time over the weekend trying to fix a drawing problem I was having in my spaces class for an assignment that was due Monday. On monday I was given feedback on some improvements I had made as well as some improvements I should still work on. I realize it will take practice in the technique we’re using in order for me to solve the problem.
In my observations class I plan on experimenting with ink and acrylic to see how they interact. I might change it up though. I don’t usually experiment with materials but I do like to experiment with techniques or drawings sometimes.
Hello, My name is Desiree. I have lived in Dallas Texas since I was six years old.I am now a freshman Majoring in Studio Art at SMU Meadows School of the Arts. I have always enjoyed art since I was a child. One of my earliest memories of making artwork are of my grandmother and I working on rudimentary level watercolor paintings of landscapes. My family has always supported me in my passion for drawing and observing things and have encouraged me to follow my dreams. I am Majoring in Studio Art so I can receive a B.F.A . I may also major or minor in Education, Arts Management, Arts Entrepreneurship, or Psychology(I haven’t yet decided).
I plan to use my artwork to change the world in one way or another. Maybe I will become famous or maybe I will use my artistic abilities in the field of psychology or education. Right now my dream is to become an professional artist that gives back to the community.
When scoring myself on the personal effectiveness rubric I found that one of the main things I should work on to become successful is risk taking (score of 2) and the two Entrepreneurial aspects of art in which I Scored around a 1 on. I sometimes doubt that my artistic abilities are enough to become successful and I become afraid to take risks. Since I am afraid to take risks it affects my entrepreneurial skills. My goal is to by the end of the year overcome these challenges. Art is what I love and want to do once I graduate but this also means I am going to have to work hard at achieving my goals.
