Texas is the only state to have been an independent country before becoming a state! Being a native Texan I am especially proud of our state; yes it is hot in the summer and usually warm (or at worst mild) in the winter. Texas is very diverse: pine forests in the east, sand and mountains in the west, gulf coast in the south and rolling hills in the center with plains in the north central area. We don't all ride horses or even wear cowboy hats. Most of the natives do say "ya'll" (which means you-all). Very few of us own ranches or raise cattle. We have big suburban areas (Dallas & Houston) and small country towns (Maydelle and Farmersville to name two) with a lot people living somewhere between (huge & small).
