LTI Tools and Blackboard
Working now to enable LTI Tools in our instance of Blackboard. In our test system, I was able to integrate a Piazza site directly into my sandbox Bb site using this relatively new standard for integrating third party tools, such as Piazza, an interactive discussion tool, in an LMS.
LTI stands for Learning Tool Interoperability and is a standard framework developed by IMS for enabling seamless integration of third party tools into learning management systems, such as Blackboard. This framework provides a mechanism for users to sign into Bb and, then through a link, access their Piazza site right in the Bb frame without having to login to that third party tool. Some LTI Tools allow for grading integration as well.
One of the more interesting LTI Tools is Blackboard’s Learning Object Repository, xpLor – see TechVid to the right. before we launch this system, we first need to get the university to approve Bb’s cloud services. We have to be sure that any university data that is shared globally through this system is adequately protected and secure, particularly student information. I am hopeful, though, we can get this interesting resource enabled by this summer. More info about xpLor and other Bb cloud services coming soon.
