Frequently Asked Questions about the Mustang Band

Q: What is the Mustang Band all about?
A: The Mustang Band is a group of SMU students that performs a unique combination of music and marching. Known as the "Hub of SMU Spirit", the Mustang Band plays at athletic competitions, the annual Pigskin Revue, spirit and recruiting functions, and other events.

Q: What happens during the fall?
A: Band members arrive a week before classes begin to work on music and marching fundamentals. First-year students in the band are introduced to the history and traditions of the band. The band marches at all home football games as well as one or two away games each year. New half-time shows are prepared about every two weeks. The band marches the traditional pre-game routine, as well as a half-time show, which often features a soloist or two. The Band forms the Diamond 'M' at the end of both half-time and pre-game. When not on the field, the band plays in the stands, contributing in their own fashion to driving the Mustangs to victory.

Q: What is the Mustang Band Marching Style?
A: The Mustang Band utilizes the traditional high step . The drill design features 4 man squad drill. This visually sets the Mustang Band apart from every other band in the nation.

Q: What is Pigskin Revue?
A: Pigskin Revue is a musical performance which features the Mustang Band playing several songs along with singing, dancing, comedy, and other talented acts from SMU faculty, staff, and students. The revue is prepared and performed throughout the week of Homecoming. The acts feature fraternities, sororities, students, and alumni. Past Pigskin Revues have also featured celebrity performers, including Bob Hope and Jerry Jeff Walker.

Q: What happens during the spring?
A: From about the beginning of December to March, the Mustang Band plays for men's and women's home basketball games at Moody Coliseum. Trips to the C-USA basketball tournament or NCAA tournaments take place in the spring. Recruiting performances and any recording all take place in the spring as well.

Q: What about traveling with the band?
A: There are chances to play at college bowl games and also at basketball tournaments, such as the C-USA basketball tournaments. The road trips are paid for by the band.  Band members are excused from classes to participate in these events.

Q: Who are band members?

Members come from the business, engineering, fine arts, and liberal arts colleges within SMU. Additionally, alumni sometimes play with the band.
