About Us

We are a social organization at Southern Methodist University that seeks to share the joy and excitement of ballroom dancing with as many people as possible. The classes are open to students, as well as anyone in the community who would like to attend.

FAQ

1. When and where does the ballroom club meet?
Usually we meet in the second floor studio in the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports. In the fall we can sometimes be found in Dallas Hall or The Varsity (in Hughes-Trigg) because the gym closes on Saturdays when we have home games. Be sure to check to schedule to see where and what we're dancing. The club goes from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. with two different (and usually contrasting) dances being taught, one each hour.

2. What about parking?
Check here for details on visitor parking

3. How much does it cost?
*The Dedman center now charges $10.00 for the entrance of non-SMU affiliated people. This is a fee not associated with our club and over which we have no control*

4. Do I need to have a partner/dance shoes/previous dance experience to attend class?
The answer to all of the above is NO! If you want to come to your partner that is certainly fine, but we usually rotate partners throughout class to let the men practice leading and the girls practice following. Dance shoes are not required, but you probably shouldn't wear tennis shoes (if you only have tennis shoes, try just socks if you're brave!) Also, please wear shoes with non-marking soles. Come to the class with a love and joy of dancing - no previous experience required!

5. What should I wear/bring to class?
Something comfortable that doesn't restrict your movement. Tennis shoes and flip flops are not recommended. A water bottle is always a good idea, and bring your SMU ID for class pricing.

6. Who is Tiny Dancer? Why do the emails from the club come up like that?
It's after the Elton John song "Tiny Dancer". Our secretary at the time thought it would be clever. No, we're not spam :)

7. But wait! I still have questions not addressed here!
That's ok. If you have any additional questions please email us at smuballroom [AT] gmail [DOT] com (remove the spaces and whatnot)
