    Value of a Club Library

The above listings highlight the growing value of the SMU amateur radio club library of amateur radio and electronics related resources. As you can see, a radio amateur at SMU can gain access to a considerable range of books and magazines via the SMU amateur radio club library. SMU's libraries also provide some considerable resources, such as QST magazine and older ARRL handbooks. By comparison, the Dallas Public Library has only three listings for ARRL publications (with only the ARRL handbooks being current). Dallas Public Library does have many microfilm and stored issues of certain amateur radio magazines, but these serials are often incomplete. Most of their amateur radio related books are older publications as well.

By comparison, the purchase under club president Anthony Klinkert of the ARRL club library of ARRL books and ARRL videotapes in 2001 A.D. provided an excellent basis for an updated club library, and at a small fraction of the cost of buying the entire series of books and videos as separate items! Note the origins of the many books above, the vast majority of which are in or on loan to the SMU amateur radio club library. By contrast, the holdings of the Dallas Public Library - one of the nation's ten largest city library systems - seems rather spare.

A related point is the value of being able to add books to a club library over time, building up resources in particular areas. For example, we have an on-going need for books about antenna systems and designs to improve our current antenna "farm". Often books are available at conventions and first saturday sales for a fraction of their original price. So relatively small amounts of money can provide large benefits in terms of information resources.

We are interested in reaching out to new members, by developing a growing library of resources on shortwave listening (SWL). SWL-ing is particularly popular now that places overseas are in the news, and with foreign students interested in news events back home, plus foreign language students. We hope to add a shortwave listening station to our club station this year (2004-5), as well as offer a shortwave listener's course. So our growing library resources in this area will obviously help expand our outreach to broader groups of students and radio listeners than just potential amateur radio users.

    Donating Needed Books

Got some publications you want to turn into a tax deductible donation to the SMU amateur radio club??? Great!!

Our biggest need is for introductory books that new hams and those studying for their licenses can use to get started. Unfortunately, we only have a single copy of such books as "Understanding Amateur Radio" and "Now You're Talking", and they tend to stay out on loan. Books on operating an amateur radio station and ARRL Antenna Handbooks and the like would be useful as well.

We would also be happy to fill holes in our holdings, or expand resources on construction and new areas of technology such as packet radio and satellite operations. These book resources get retained for decades, so your donation(s) will be making an impact for many years to come!
