Visitors
Visitors are always welcome to the SMU amateur radio club meetings and activities.
If you wish to visit the club station, please contact one of the club officers listed
in the Club Officers Contacts
section of this site.
A key-holding member can meet you on the first floor student lounge and escort you up to the ham shack. In 2002, our station trustee Luther Pulley held "open house" sessions at the SMU W5YF station, usually on Saturdays, during which he also operated and put SMU's W5YF station on-the-air.
For Spring 2003, we plan on having a series of monthly station demonstration programs. The primary purpose of these sessions is to allow new club members and licensed amateur radio operators to be "checked out" on the proper use of the club station W5YF equipment. However, F.C.C. regulations allow non-licensed persons to talk over an amateur radio station while a licensed control operator is in charge of the station. So you can use one of these sessions to get on the air yourself as part of these programs. Again, contact us if you would like to attend one of these sessions.
Are you interested in getting your amateur radio license? We have the entry level (no-code) Technician license
video tapes (3) and instruction manuals plus ARRL Question and Answer Guides for the Technician (and General Class)
licenses on reserve at CMIT. CMIT is in Fondren Library West, serving as SMU's media library, and has videotape
players with headphones where visitors may view tapes. The Technician licensing course materials are available for viewing
by visitors as well as SMU students, faculty, and staff. Simply ask for these videotapes under Dr. Milton Gosney's
reserves at CMIT. Since CMIT is open 7 days a week and circa 80 hours/week, there isn't any reason not to stop
by and review these licensing materials!
We will also be offering a series of short training courses during the coming
2003 spring semester. Again, our classes are also open to visitors who wish to participate too. Join us!
