Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide campaigning movement that works to promote all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international standards. In particular, AI strives for the following:

  1. free prisoners of conscience
  2. ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners
  3. abolish the death penalty, torture, and other cruel treatment of prisoners
  4. end political killings and "disappearances"
  5. oppose human rights abuses by opposition groups

SMU AI is Southern Methodist University's chapter of Amnesty International. Our group of students, faculty and staff, write letters to politicians, host film screenings and fundraising events, and many other actions geared towards promoting the social justice priorities of AI on campus and in the Dallas area. All are welcome to join SMU AI, and groups can partner with SMU AI to achieve mutually beneficial goals. AI is independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest, or religion. We do not support or oppose any government or political system, nor do we support or oppose the views of the victims whose rights we seek to protect. AI is concerned solely on the impartial protection of human rights.
