Pre-Medical Events for Fall 2007
Alpha Epsilon Delta sponsors at least one public meeting each month dealing with issues concerning premedical students. Meetings are usually at 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoons in Dedman Life Sciences Building (see #29 on this map). Meetings are open to the public, and all pre-medical students are urged to attend, beginning in their first year.
"Pre-Med 101"
When: Monday, August 27, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Room 131 - Dedman Life Sciences Building
A special event "Pre-Med 101" is designed primarily for first-year and transfer
students. This event, which is co-sponsored by AED, will include a lively information session with
four science professors at 5 p.m. in room 131 Dedman Life Sciences Building and a get-acquainted
mixer for all science faculty and premedical students at 5:45 p.m. in the lobby.
Additionally,
AED officers who have survived the first two years of premedical courses will
be there to offer
their tips for success and answer any questions. They can tell you from first-hand experience about the courses and the
instructors.
"Unlocking the Door to Medical School "
When: Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Room 123 - Fondren Science Building
Our guest will be Dr. David Jones, Chairman of the Admissions Committee and Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. Dr. Jones will tell us what the typical Admissions Committee looks for in an applicant, how to prepare the most eye-catching application and set of credentials, and how to shine in the medical school interview.
"College Students: A Unique Medical Challenge"
When: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Room 123 - Fondren Science Building
Dr. Nancy Merrill and Dr. Peter Davis, co-Medical Directors of SMU's Health Center and full-time staff physicians, and Mr. Pat Hite, Director of Health Services, will be our guests. After describing the scope of their activities and responsibilities, our guests will present some of their most interesting medical cases at SMU. There will be plenty of time for your questions.
"Reflections on Medical Education: Scientific Foundations for Future Physicians"

"In Your Face: Plastic Surgery in the 21st Century"

Dr. D.J. Verret, a facial plastic surgeon in Plano, TX, will be our guest. He will speak about career choices and various medical residencies, and then finish with a few case presentations accompanied by pictures and interesting CT scans. You don't want to miss this special event!

Faculty members will talk about opportunities to get involved in their research labs. You need to act on this information before all of the openings are filled. In addition, faculty and upperclassmen will talk about "how to crack finals."

Dr. Stephen Morse, a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, is a renowned expert in mental health and criminal law. Professionally trained in both law and psychology, his work emphasizes individual responsibility in criminal and civil law. He is widely published in law reviews as well as journals of psychology and psychiatry. He will speak on how the new neuroscience challenges the concept of moral and legal responsibility.
Experiences of a Cardiothoracic and Trauma Surgeon at Balad Airbase, Iraq
When: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 5:00 p.m.
Where: Room 131 - Dedman Life Sciences Building
Major (Dr.) Jeffrey McNeil, a cardiothoracic surgeon stationed at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, recently returned from a second deployment to the Air Force Theatre Hospital at Balad Airbase, Iraq. He will provide an overview of his personal experiences (lots of photos!) and a summary of current combat casualty care at one of the busiest trauma hospitals in Iraq. Major McNeil is a 1992 graduate of SMU and was in the second class to join our AED chapter.
